It is really for ease of management. In this case, I am using virtual machines to separate the different tasks. One for serving web pages and one for storing downloadable files and images. I liked this approach since I could keep the webserver and its files small and allow the NAS with the images and downloads can get big quickly. This makes backups and disaster recovery easier.
